What Is Migraine?

Migraine is a neurological condition, not just a headache. It causes recurring attacks of moderate to severe headaches, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light, sound, or smell. Migraines can last from a few hours to several days and may significantly affect daily activities and quality of life.

Stages of a Migraine Attack

A migraine attack typically occurs in four stages. Not all patients experience every stage.

Stage 1: Prodrome (Early Warning Stage)

This stage can begin hours or even days before the onset of a migraine.

  • Mood changes
  • Constipation
  • Neck stiffness
  • Frequent yawning
  • Food cravings
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Difficulty concentrating

Stage 2: Aura

Aura affects some migraine patients and usually occurs before or during the headache. Typically, last 20–60 minutes.

Common aura symptoms include:

  • Visual disturbances (flashing lights, zigzag lines, blind spots)
  • Tingling or numbness in the face, hands, or arms
  • Speech or language difficulties
  • Temporary vision loss

Stage 3: Headache (Migraine Attack)

This is the most intense phase of a migraine. It can last from 4 hours to 72 hours if untreated.

You may experience:

  • Moderate to severe head pain
  • Pain on one or both sides of the head
  • Pulsating or throbbing sensation
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Extreme sensitivity to light, sound, or smell

Stage 4: Postdrome (Recovery Phase)

After the headache subsides, patients may feel drained or unwell. This stage may last up to 24–48 hours.

Common postdrome symptoms include:

  • Confused
  • Moodiness
  • Dizziness
  • Weak
